More than just color

Filament is not just plain plastic. Manufacturers mix in pigments, dyes, and additives that change how a print looks, how it behaves, and even how much it wears down your printer. Understanding these helps you get better results and protect your machine.

Filament diameter and tolerances

Before additives, know that the diameter of the filament itself matters. Your printer’s firmware assumes a consistent diameter to calculate exactly how much to extrude.

1.75 mm

The most common desktop size (including your Adventurer 5M). More flexible and easier to spool tightly.

2.85 mm (3 mm)

Found on some larger and industrial printers. Stiffer and higher flow.
Why diameter consistency matters:
  • Extrusion accuracy: the printer calculates volume from the diameter, so an inconsistent strand over- or under-extrudes.
  • Clogging vs slipping: too thick and it jams the nozzle; too thin and the extruder gear slips.
  • Layer adhesion: uneven diameter means uneven, weaker layers.
Quality filament lists a tight tolerance like 1.75 mm ± 0.02 mm. Cheap filament with loose tolerance is a common hidden cause of inconsistent prints. You can spot-check with calipers.

How color affects printing

Pigments do more than change appearance:
Dark colors absorb more heat and may need slightly higher nozzle temperatures than light colors of the same material.
Transparent filament shows layer lines and gloss. Matte hides imperfections. Metallic and pearlescent finishes can highlight small flaws.
Lower-quality filament can vary in color along the spool. High-end filament stays uniform from start to finish.

Special-effect additives

Additives create striking effects, but many are abrasive and wear out soft brass nozzles quickly.
Abrasive filaments destroy brass nozzles. Glow-in-the-dark, metal-fill, wood-fill, and carbon fiber all grind away soft brass and hurt accuracy. Switch to a hardened steel or ruby nozzle before printing them.

Filled filaments often need higher temperatures and slower speeds to avoid clogs.

Expect more clogs

Particles in filled filament can block a standard nozzle if settings are not tuned.

Maintain more often

Heavy filled filaments mean more frequent nozzle checks and replacements.
